1+3 Reasons Why EDSA Shouldn't Be Renamed

Eat Bulaga's new theme song:
Mula Ninoy hanggang Cory.
Of course, public outrage ensued once people learned the plan of a certain solon from Bohol to change the name of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (colloquially EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue, in honor of Corazon Aquino, Philippine "mother of democracy" and mommy of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. Although we understand the intentions of the solon to pay tribute to Cory, but renaming an avenue regarded as a hell-hole (traffic, potholes, whatnots) after Tita Cory? She just might rise from her grave and haunt this man and do whatever scare tactics she has up her sleeve to stop this bill from passing. This reminds me of another renaming stint involving the a man from Manila. Things got ugly (read: vehement opposition) the last time a certain Aquino fanatic tried to officially rename the internationally-regarded Manila Science High School to Cory Aquino Science High School two years ago. But after he realized that everyone from the MaSci community opposed his plan, he eventually backed-off and just had a statue of the former president built and erected somewhere in Manila.

Going back, in addition to what I have mentioned earlier, I have thought of three other reasons why EDSA should not be renamed to CAA:

Soon to open: Bimby Boulevard and
Josh, Bimby and Tito Noy's Toy Palace
  • Historical reasons. As Gang Badoy puts it, "NOT CHANGING street names is a cost-effective and intelligently thoughtful way to historically preserve a heritage site." Furthermore, Cory was born out of EDSA, not the other way around.
  • Aquino name monopoly. Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Corazon Aquino Avenue. Kris Aquino's face plastered on tv and in print. What's next? The Josh and Bimby Toy Palace? Luz-Vi-Minda renamed to Co-Ra-Zon?
Cory Quirino Avenue:
Beauty Pageant Avenue
  • Confusion with Cory Quirino. I have to admit, I have erroneously typed Cory Quirino Avenue several times on Twitter instead of Cory Aquino Avenue. You can't blame me, some people have even read Aquino as Quirino (as attested to by my friend Maffy). We can't possibly have Cory Quirino Avenue here! Imagine: Cory Quirino Avenue: The Avenue of Beauty Queens! An avenue flanked with women wearing national costumes, evening gowns, and swimsuits! (Bench, looks like you have a competitor!)
With much more urgent bills impeding in the lower house like the Reproductive Health Bill and the Freedom of Information Bill, how come our solons have the time to delay those for this? The best way to pay tribute to Tita Cory? Have our solons stop wasting their (and our) time (and their pork barrel as well) and put more effort in legislating socially-relevant laws. And improve EDSA's traffic flow. Those will definitely make her proud.
